We’ve heard the term “unprecedented time” so much lately. As our world understands more about COVID-19, our manufacturers and partners are working to maintain business channels and keep our community supplied with the products we need.
Our staff is here for you however we might be of assistance. We have been distributing a weekly “COVID-19 Briefing” email. The intent is to provide you with quality information with attention to brevity, curated for our industry. These emails can be read in about five minutes and include links for deep dives and more information. If you or someone in your company would like to receive these emails, please contact Amanda@FCMAweb.com.
The manufacturing industry is resilient. I have never been more proud of our Association, with strong and forward-thinking business leaders. If I can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Manufacturing on the First Coast
FloridaMakes Works with Industry to Sponsor the First Statewide Online Manufacturing Apprentice Program
FloridaMakes is sponsoring a statewide registered apprenticeship program –– the FloridaMakes Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship. The first program offered will focus on entry-level skills for new and existing employees in the Industrial Manufacturing Technician (IMT) occupation. With online, on-demand access to the foundational Manufacturing Skills Standards Council’s (MSSC) Certified Production Technician training curriculum, this new approach brings Florida’s manufacturers a hybrid training model that addresses entry-level skills gaps and provides foundational manufacturing knowledge regardless of the specific occupation, which will help give apprentices the tools they need to move on to more specific occupations. It also bypasses the need for employees attending courses at institutions and provides flexible access for students with lifestyles, work schedules, and geographical barriers that often prohibit participation in traditional “in-class” offerings.
“FloridaMakes is here to serve and assist our manufacturers with talent development challenges,” said Tina Berger, Director of Talent Development at FloridaMakes. “For years manufacturers have voiced a need to revamp the tried and true earn-and-learn apprenticeship programs, calling for competency-based versus time-based learning models. The IMT Apprenticeship Program addresses this request as a gamechanger for small and medium-sized companies and, in particular, for those with facilities in rural communities without access to traditional vocational training centers.”
The program was designed through a sector strategy approach led by multiple employers within the industry, represented within the Florida Advanced Manufacturing Workforce Leadership Council (AMWLC), in collaboration with FloridaMakes, CareerSource Florida, the Florida Department of Education’s Division of Career and Adult Education, and the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC). Training Grants Available
The Florida CareerSource Incumbent Worker Training (IWT) grant will still be available this year and will begin taking grant applications on July 1st. This grant can cover 50-75% of your internal and external training requirements, depending on company size. Companies must submit their training plans for the next 12 months as part of the application, so now is the time to be planning and working with our FloridaMakes business advisor, Rob Caldwell. He is available to assist with questions, training plans, and the application process. He can be reached at (904) 436-3266 or by email at Rob.caldwell@FloridaMakes.com. Grant funding has historically been depleted early, so do not let this opportunity to fund a large part of your training needs pass you by.
CareerSource Northeast Florida also still has grant funding available for workforce technical training. Contact Roben Faircloth for more information: firstname.lastname@example.org or (904) 798-9229 ext. 2228.
Florida Manufacturers COVID-19 Survey
The Florida Manufacturers COVID-19 Survey will help Florida’s manufacturers connect products and capabilities to help with current short-term COVID-19 efforts and gauge the impacts that the current crisis is having on manufacturing in the state. To complete the survey, click Manufacturing COVID-19 Impact Survey. It really is important that we can quantify the impact that this has had on manufacturers from a statewide perspective. It should only take a few minutes to complete the survey.
